Amanda Tapping

Amanda Tapping plays Major Samantha Carter

Brilliant scientist Samantha Carter was transferred from the Pentagon to the Stargate mission to help them with the scientific applications needed to run and understand the Stargate. Together with Dr. Daniel Jackson, she makes up the scientific part of the team. She has a PhD in astrophysics and saw active combat flying during the Gulf War.

Samantha Carter is the quintessential geek; while being extraordinarily talented scientifically, she has trouble functioning in “normal” life. She has a long-lasting unspoken love for Colonel O’Neill, and has not had a single long-lasting relationship because of it. She spends her vacations poring over new alien technologies, and doesn’t have much of a life outside of her work.

Amanda’s background

Amanda Tapping was born in Rochford, Essex, England on August 28, 1965. She is a fraternal twin. Her family moved to Canada when she was three years old. While in school, she won drama and scientific awards. Her parents wanted her to pursue science as a career, but she followed her dream to perform instead. She graduated from the University of Windsor School of Dramatic Arts in Windsor, Ontario. During this time, she vowed not to perform on television, and kept busy doing theatre. She later hired an agent and began doing commercials to support herself and the comedy group she had formed with some friends called “Random Acts”. She married Alan Kovacs in 1994, and had a daughter in 2005. Currently she is a spokesperson for UNICEF.

She stepped behind the camera to try her hand at directing one episode of “Stargate: SG-1.” She is also the executive producer for “Sanctuary.”
